This Friday, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy flies into theaters around the World, bringing a new movie franchise to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Going in to see this movie, I had no idea what to expect, as I hadn't seen any trailers or read anything about the film before seeing it. I was pleasantly surprised by how good this movie really was, as I expected it not to be as good as some people had said it was.
When we first see Peter Quill, his mother is in the hospital and is dying. Immediately afterwards, he is stolen in a spaceship and taken away from Earth. The next time that we see him, he is stealing a mysterious orb, which turns out to be a huge plot point in the story. At that point, little do we know that the Orb is sought after by the film's villain, Ronan as well as Quill's boss, Thanos. Quill is attached to his tape that his mother gave him with songs from the 1970's and it is constantly used throughout the film. In addition, a few others want that Orb as well including Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot.
After a big fight and lots of action over the Orb between these creatures that later became the Guardians of the Galaxy, they're all taken to Jail. From there, they hatch a big plan, and escape the prison, so that they can sell the Orb to the "Collector", which is where things get interesting.
Once the Orb is given to the "Collector", one of his workers uses the Orb's power and nearly destroys all of the characters, and that's when we learn how much power the Orb contains. Its at that point that we see Ronan interact with Drax in a fight that causes lots of anger between the Guardians.
Later on in the movie, the big battle between the Guardians and Ronan begins, but with the Orb in the hands of Ronan, he is nearly indestructible. Eventually, they stop him, but as the spaceship tumbles and crashes on the ground, Groot sacrifices his life to help the rest of the heroes survive. The movie ends with the words, "The Guardians of the Galaxy will Return". As it turns out, that is true. The sequel to this film has been announced for July 28th, 2014 and should pick up where this one left off and may see the return of Groot, who is, in my opinion, the best character in this film.
Overall, Guardians of the Galaxy exceeded my expectations in every way. It was hilarious, especially Groot, who surprisingly, even though he only said one thing repeatedly, was very comedic. Also, there were lots of plot twists and surprises, which I didn't include here, that really keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time. Of course, as a Marvel movie, lots of action was present, but it was a good balance of humor and action. I wouldn't say that the 3D enhanced the movie very much, as I kept forgetting that the movie was in 3D. One thing that I should warn you about though, is the language in the movie is definitely not for kids, and is very adult in nature, more than in any of the other Marvel movies. I would rate Guardians of the Galaxy 4.5/5 stars.
