On March 25th, Warner Bros & DC Comics released their latest film, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. It has been anticipated and talked about for years and unfortunately, did not live up to expectations. In fact, in it's second weekend it has dropped a record-breaking 81% in the box office. Being someone who mainly sticks to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this movie was a little bit out of the ordinary for me, so to make sure I knew what I was getting into, I read a little bit about the film before seeing it. But that did not help, the film was extremely hard to follow, and from what I've been reading, it's not just me!
There are several subplots to the film, and that's perfectly fine. However, it was the execution of the story that made the movie as confusing as it is. The storyline didn't make a whole lot of sense, and even towards the end of the film when it started to make sense - it still didn't make a whole lot of sense. But, one thing that I wasn't thinking of, but I later found out, was that this movie sets up the entire DC Cinematic Universe. That still does not make the fact that the story was poorly executed okay.
One of the major complaints that I have heard from people that have seen the movie is that there was only a few minutes of Batman actually facing off with Superman and then the film heads in a completely different direction. I agree that it is kind of dumb to call a movie Batman v. Superman and then have them fight for only a few minutes, but it is part of the story and I honestly was not surprised. That's just a note in case you go in expecting a lot of action between Superman and Batman.
Even though the story was a low point of the film - there were still a few high points. The characters were very well played by their actors, especially Batman. Another thing that helps the film is that it has many surprises. It also builds excitement for future movies to come, for example, the Justice League films that are coming out in a few years. It also ends with a cliffhanger, but if you blink, you will miss it.
I do not want to give away the plot, as this movie has lots of things that can be spoiled but I will say that this is not a kids movie. It may be rated PG-13 like The Avengers, but has much more adult topics and a serious tone. In fact, it was almost rated R and it will be when released as an extended cut on Blu-Ray. If your kid is 13 or older, then they should be fine in this movie.
Overall, if you are in to DC, Batman, or Superman, then go ahead and see it. I definitely think you should see it at some point, but you definitely should do some research if you're new to the genre. I wouldn't say to go see it immediately in theaters, but it's worth picking up from the Redbox, or buying on iTunes when it is released!
RATING: 3/5 STARS
